Gut Microbiota and Probiotics, Prebiotics, Synbiotics
People to maintain a healthy lifestyle, it is necessary to have a healthy gastrointestinal tract. This is provided by intestinal microflora. Probiotics, prebiotics and synbiotics are used to strengthen the beneficial microflora of the gut.
PROBİOTİCS
Probiotics are live microorganisms added to foods that offer potential health benefits to the host when consumed in adequate amounts (WHO). This group includes lactobacilli, bifidobacteria and enterococci. The fact that probiotics can be active without being harmed in the gastrointestinal environment is due to their resistance in a high acid environment.
It has been determined that probiotic microorganisms have effects preventing intestinal disorders. Probiotic bacteria settle on the intestinal surface, prevent the adhesion of unwanted bacteria and control the growth of these bacteria with the antimicrobial substances they produce. Probiotics may provide benefits, as well:
- Aid digestion
- Produce vitamins
- Reduce intestinal transit time
- Fight cancer
- Reduce inflammation
- Reduce cholesterol and blood pressure
- Protect against foodborne illness
- Assist in lactose digestion
- Promotes urinary health
PREBİOTİCS
Prebiotic was described as “a non-digestible food ingredient that beneficially affects the host by selectively stimulating the growth and/or activity of one or a limited number of bacteria in the colon, and thus improves host health”(Glenn Gibson and Marcel Roberfroid). Short and long-chain β-fructans (Fructooligosaccharides and inulin), Lactulose, and Galactooligosaccharides can be classified as prebiotics. They can feed the intestinal microbiota, and their degradation products are short-chain fatty acids that provide energy for the cells lining the wall of the gut. This is potentially protective against colon cancer and other diseases. Consuming prebiotics can improve immunity functions by increasing the population of protective microorganisms.
SYNBİOTİCS
If a food contains both probiotics and prebiotics, it is called synbiotics. Synbiotics are thought to increase probiotic stability in the gastrointestinal tract.
Some Synbiotics:
Bifidobacterium+Fructooligosaccharides
Lactobacillus+Lactitol
Bifidobacterium+Galactooligosaccharides
There are many studies on the positive
effects of prebiotics and probiotics on
human health.therefore, we should be
careful to include in our diet. We begin to
build this flora early in life and it is important
to eat a varied diet.
